What is Broadband?
What is all the fuss about, you may ask. Well, our broadband guide gives a comprehensive look at what broadband is all about, but here's a quick introduction.
Its all about speed. Broadband is to dial up what Red Rum is to the nag coming last in the 3-15 at Catterick. It's fast. The slowest widely available broadband connection is ten times as fast as dial up and the fastest - for the time being, they are getting faster all the time - is around a hundred times faster.
So What Does That Mean Then?
In practical terms it means you can:
- Browse Web pages faster.
- Be aways connected to the Internet.
- Get new interactive games and services.
- Get features like streaming music, video and more.
In short, it takes the strain out of online life. No more waiting around for even simple downloads, no getting kicked off due to server overload.
And don't forget, broadband is not really any more expensive than dial up, so more and more, the best bits of the internet are developed on the assumption that users will be accessing on broadband. In the not too distant future, it may well be that the net will be all but un-usable if you haven't got broadband.
